Against Some years ago, while standing in line at a 7-11, a young man stepped hard on my foot. I looked at him and he said "That's for the C I received in your class." I was glad he didn't have a gun. Put guns all over the campus and you will, I predict, find another angry student who decides he didn't deserve the grade he received and he will shoot someone. Even normal and carefully vetted people get angry and out of control. Allowing guns on campus will end an innocent life sooner or later. Listen to the police. They don't want them there. Jun-02-2011
For Please vote in favor of sb231. Jun-02-2011
For Responsible, law-abiding citizens who have met the requirements for a CCW permit should be allowed to carry on college campuses. This includes faculty and staff. Criminal acts of violence against unarmed students and faculty might be prevented or minimized by alert, responsible, trained, CCW permit holders. Prevent people on college campuses from being "sitting ducks," because law-abiding citizens did not carry their weapons on campus. This should be extended to K-12 campuses, as well. When lock-downs occur, I have always instructed my children to GET OUT OF THERE! Leave school, so you will not be herded into a classroom--trapped inside a space to be gunned down. Jun-01-2011
For Chairman Horne: This bill will save lives. As a legislator you are to listen to the will of the people. Bring this bill to an up or down vote, but don't delay if your think the vote won't go your way. Jun-01-2011
Against Only law enforcement officers should be carrying weapons on campus. Jun-01-2011
Against As the President and official voice of the entire student body at the College of Southern Nevada, I oppose this bill. If there may be a need to clarify some of the policies and procedures on our campuses, this matter should be handled by the Board of Regents, not the legislators. You are completely slammed with trying to save our state from utter decimation due to budgetary shortfalls. Let this bill die. It's good for our education system; it's good for Nevada. Students across the board have expressed that this bill is a BAD idea and they completely oppose. Thank you for your time and we appreciate your hard work, Aimee Riley President CSN Student Government Cell: 702-207-9146 Jun-01-2011
For I am in full support as submitted Jun-01-2011
For I appreciate the testimony about letting administrators determine who can carry on campus, however the unofficial word is not to apply if you wish to continue as a student or employee. Campus should b eno differnet than anywhere else in regards to an individual's right to defend themselves. Jun-01-2011
Against Guns on UNR's campus? Let's see...that would mean guns in the Student Health Center, the Family Medicine Center, the JCSU movie theater, the Child & Family Research Center, the Lombardi Student Recreation Center, the Davidson Academy, the Speech & Hearing Clinic, the Sanford Center for Aging, the Student Counseling Center, the School of Social Work, ASUN meetings, etc. Guns in any classroom on campus? The Nevada State Legislature thinks that it's okay for *anyone* with a CCW permit to carry guns in any of these places when guns are not allowed in the Legislature, the DMV, DETR, etc? Please explain to me why students, faculty, and staff should be any safer with more guns on campuses when they are prohibited in any other state agency. NSHE already has a policy related to CCW permit holder. Let that policy stay in place. May-31-2011
Against Please don't allow guns in my workplace, just as you don't allow guns in yours at the Legislature. May-31-2011
For natural law, to self defense May-31-2011
For Please pass this bill. Although I don't believe there should be any restrictions on concealed carry, this bill is too important to miss the overal goal of providing the ability for self-protection. It would allow both students and faculty to obtain a CCW permit and lawfully excercise the constitutional right to bear arms for self protection. I have two students (son and daughter) currently attendting UNR. Although UNR does an admirable job protecting the campus, they can't be everywhere. With budget cuts, the UNRPD presence is likely to diminish. I urge you pass SB 231 to allow those who wish to, the ability to excercise their right to self-protection. Against Carrying a gun on campus is a receipe for disaster. How will anyone be able to tell who a "bad guy" is when a gun is out? Please continue to rely on trained professionals to use guns. There is NO evidence that carrying a gun would have had a successful conclusion to any prior offences on campus and probably some evidence that having guns would resulted in disaster. Vote NO!!!! Against May-31-2011
For Self defense shouldn't end at some imaginary line. The scare tactics used by the anti's, the things they say will happen, such as students getting drunk and shooting each other, have not happened anywhere campus carry is allowed, and is only based on irrational fears and opinions. Nevada wants this. Nevada students need this. Good job on the Senate passing, now it's up to the assembly and the governor. Let's get this bill passed by the fall. May-31-2011
Against I am against this measure. As a parent and a former student I don't feel safer having concealed weapons on campus. As a person who occasionally teaches at the Community college this makes me hesitant to teach on campus. The State buildings has a prohibition for concealed weapons the same should be true for our institutions of higher learning. May-30-2011

For People are able to defend themselves in their own houses & vehicles. Why shouldn't students be able to protect themselves on Campus? Concealed Carry Permittee's have already been thru extensive backgrounds checks & safety training. These are not children who are unable to decide whether they are able to use a firearm, they are adults who have PAID to be on their respective Campus's & as such should have the option to protect themselves if need be. This is not for the Campus Hierarchy to decide; but each individual student. Please allow our students the option to defend themselves & each other, should the occasion arise. Let's not wait until we have our own "Columbine" here in Nevada. Thank you for your time. May-28-2011

For I strongly support this bill as introduced. I find no reason for any of the amendment other than the requirement to provide storage for firearms. The limit on sporting events will again leave people defenseless against attackers while going to and from the event. If you insist on the amendment, then you should also require storage for firearms in the facilities where they aren’t allowed so citizens can protect themselves going to and from the events. For With cases such as in Virginia and Texas and Arizona it is more apparent than ever that concealed carry can save lives and extending that ability to a campus of higher education is only another place concealed carriers can help. With local situations such as the abduction, rape and murder of Brianna Dennison it is clear that this ammendment could help in many situations. Apr-14-2011

Against We are adamantly opposed to allowing weapons on campuses. We have studied the arguments and simply don't buy the rationale that students will be able to protect themselves if they carry firearms. We need to teach civility not firearm safety. That would be a nice change in our society! Apr-12-2011
For Please extend CCW Right to carry to our college campuses. Eliminate the "criminal safety zone" on these campuses created by, feel good but a dismal failure, "gun free zone" legislation. My daughter goes to UNLV and I feel she will be safer with CCW on campus, making criminals and madmen look for a safer place for them to ply their trade. Apr-11-2011
For When the state of Nevada issues a Concealed Firearms Permit to an individual to legally carry a firearm within the state it only makes sense to allow the permit holder to carry on a college campus. After all anyone who would want to bring a weapon on any campus to do harm does not care one bit about breaking the law. Criminals don’t view the laws as a deterrent to crime. Laws only are a deterrent to the law abiding population. Apr-11-2011

For As a retired law enforcement officer, I strongly urge you to support SB 231. This is a common sense bill to eliminate safe zones for crime. Under current law potential victims are prohibited from carrying a firearm for self defense while criminals ignore such laws and prey upon victims that are unarmed. We know that criminals prefer defenseless victims and that the possibility of a victim being armed discourages many crimes. Thank you. Apr-08-2011

For This bill will make college campuses safer by ensuring that law abiding citizens have the capacity to protect themselves. Please remember that criminals do not follow the law, so banning firearms from college campuses does absolutely nothing to protect students from criminals. Apr-03-2011
For I am a student and also employed by UNLV. I typically spend more than 12 hours on university property, often during late night hours when crime is high. I have a CCW permit and I support the passage of this bill. Apr-02-2011
Against There are already ways for people who need them to have guns on campus. Statistics off the National Crime Victim Rights Week website report that violent victimization among college students 18 to 24 is lower than non-students of the same age. 93% of crimes against college students occur OFF Campus, 72% of those at night. 40% of violent crimes against college students were committed by offenders who were percieved by their victims to be using drugs or alcohol. 97 percent of the crime on college campuse Mar-31-2011

For We have witnessed enough "scary and quite plausible" scenarios in recent years, namely the V-Tech massacre. Liberal gun-grabbers seem content to allow tragedies such as this to continue. Had someone at the V-Tech campus returned fire, the killer would have been prevented from inflicting so much death. Lets prevent this scenario from happening in Nevada. Vote YES on SB 231. Mar-29-2011
Against Do NOT pass this. I can just see the scenario. Someone brings a gun to school and is showing it to someone. Everyone else who is carrying does not know what exactly is happening and starts shooting. Since they don't know who is doimg what, they shoot at whomever has already fired. Scary and quite plausible. Do NOT pass. Mar-29-2011

For I believe that you should be able to carry on campus if you have a CCW, there is no difference between campus and the surrounding community. The areas surrounding most large campuses are filled with unsavory individuals and many students do not park on campus due to classes are closer to parking off campus then to the parking available on campus. Many classes are also at night making it necessary for us to walk through the surrounding neighborhood at night to get to our cars. We need to protect ourselves. Mar-27-2011

Against This state is already saturated with guns. This bill is a ridiculous waste of time. Please devote your time to addressing real problems. Mar-25-2011
For In my interpretation of Nevada Laws, other statutes already allow for prohibition of firearms in day care facilities that happen to be on college campuses. Further more, NSHE facilities that are located on K-12 grounds would still be a prohibited location. Nothing contained in this bill or in state preemption would prohibit campus administrators from setting administrative rules requiring students who live in dorms to adequately secure firearms that are not on their person. Nothing about a college campus makes it less likely for violence to occur, in fact it's more likely. For SB231 is long overdue and I hope you will vote to allow a CCW qualified person to carry on our campuses and schools and day care centers. It makes no sense to say that if a person has qualified for a CCW, then to say the person is a danger to others when attending college, a teacher in a school or day care center. For This bill is integral in the safety and security of college students. It benefits even non permit holders as well as permit holders as persons intent on committing violent acts would no longer be assured that their victims are unarmed and unable to defend themselves. I urge every member of the Assembly and Senate to support and pass this bill. Mar-09-2011
