| For | Legislators define the limits of behavior for their community. Here, Nevada's lawmakers might notice, as Mark Manendo probably did, that the value of horse tripping lay in the thrill of discovering whether a particular large animal is surprised when the group chasing it pulls its legs out from underneath it and whether it's hurt when it tries to stand up again. Otherwise, it lay in the satisfaction of causing something big to slam to the ground. It would be interesting to hear any horse-tripper articulate a morally sufficient justification for their actions. Whatever Mexico wants to do is great and people who live there should have the right to choose. | Against | Horse tripping and steer tailing is NOT cruelty to animals. They are methods used to handle them making it possible to administer medication and perform other procedures necessary for proper management. People that raise these animals and perform these methods, depend on the animals to make their living. Why would they do anything to harm them? These methods have been used for hundreds of years to handle and manage these animals. Animal rights groups are very uneducated about the reasons for these methods and very uneducated about the handling and managing of the animals. I do beleive they mean well and are good hearted people, but they don't have a clue about rasing and managing large herds of cattle or horses. The methods are not always pleasant for the animals, but they cause no long term damage and can hardly be considered cruelty, and they are necessary, much like a trip to the doctor or dentist. It isn't always pleasant, but it is necessary for proper health. Animal rights activist don't understand this because they have no experience managing large herds, and there is no way they could understand it unless they have had to deal with those situations. Ranching and farming requires handling animals in one form or another. Horses and cattle must be caught in order to doctor, brand, seperate, or handle them for a variety of reasons. City folk that have never raised their own food do not realize why we must handle our livestock in this way. We do not abuse our animals, we raise them for all mankinds benefit. Whether it be for food, fiber, or leather these animals must me managed and roping is just one means of livestock management. Fish are caught in nets. Lobster and crabs are caught in traps. Chickens are raised in pens. Lambs are rounded up by dogs. Cattle are roped and penned. Horses are roped. This is how we have evolved as a farming society. They are not tripped intentionally, and a rancher would not endanger a valuable horse on purpose. However, there is some risk involved, a with all handling of livestock. There are some ranch rodeos who incorporate this practice into their events, but the event is not referred to as 'horse tripping', but horse roping. The animal rights activists would have you believe that tripping is the goal. However, if a team injures a horse, they are automatically disqualified. This makes it more appropriate for a team to take great care to not injure the horse. Mexican rodeos, on the other hand, do feature a 'Horse Tripping' event that should be outlawed. The point is, there is a huge difference between the roping of horses on Nevada ranches, as replicated at some ranch rodeos, and the "Horse Tripping" event at Mexican Rodeos.
