Nevada Youth Legislature

Membership: The Nevada Youth Legislature is composed of 21 high-school-age students who are selected from each of Nevada's senatorial districts. Each member of the Youth Legislature is appointed by a Nevada State Senator with input from members of the Nevada State Assembly.

Duties: The Youth Legislature is required to: (1) evaluate, review, and comment upon issues of importance to the youth in this state; (2) hold at least two public hearings in this state each school year, which may be teleconferenced or videoconferenced to certain locations throughout the state; (3) conduct public awareness and outreach campaigns directed toward the youth of Nevada; (4) submit a report of its activities to the Legislature; and (5) each Youth Legislator shall conduct at least one meeting to give Nevada youth an opportunity to discuss issues important to the youth of this State.

Powers: The Youth Legislature may, within the limits of available money: (1) meet as often as necessary during a regular legislative session to conduct the business of the Youth Legislature and to advise the Legislature on proposed legislation relating to the youth of this state; (2) form committees to assist with the business of the Youth Legislature; (3) conduct periodic seminars for its members regarding leadership, government and the legislative process; and (4) request the drafting of one legislative measure which relates to matters within the scope of the Youth Legislature.

If you live in an area that is represented by more than one Nevada State Senator, you may submit your application to only one Senator.
