Finish By June 4th

The Assembly Sergeant at Arms staff gathers amendments to pass out to the Legislators. The Legislature will be working through the weekend in order to finish all business and adjourn Sine Die on Monday, June 4th.

Sine Die

The 74th Session of the Nevada Legislature adjourned Sine Die at 2:40 AM on Tuesday, June 5, 2007. Adjournment sine die literally means "adjournment without a day"; it marks the end of the legislative session, since it does not set a time for reconvening.

Memorial Ceremony

As part of 2007 National Police Week, a ceremony was held at the Memorial, which is the official state memorial honoring all Nevada Law Enforcement Officers who have given their lives in service to their communities.

Mouryne Landing Dini Honored on
Assembly Wall of Distinction

Mouryne Landing Dini was honored by being added to the Assembly Wall of Distinction by Speaker of the Assembly Barbara Buckley. Mrs. Dini served as Chief Clerk of the Nevada Assembly for an all-time Nevada record of 23 years, from 1973 through 1995. Among her many accomplishments was being a member of the Revision Commission for the Mason’s Manual of Legislative Procedure and being the President of the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries.

Legislature Works on Saturday to Finish Business

Legislators and staff worked on Saturday closing budgets as the end of the 74th Legislative Session nears. Session will end on or before Monday, June 4, 2007.

Legislative Cowboy Hall of Fame

Assemblyman John "The Boss" Carpenter created the Legislative Cowboy Hall of Fame during the 70th Legislative Session. Inductions, including the bestowal of a cowboy moniker befitting the inductee, have been a biennial Session tradition ever since.

Legislature Putting In Long Hours

Legislators worked late on Friday night to meet the deadline for second House passage of bills.  The Legislature has now met all six of the major deadlines contained in the rules (two for introduction of measures and four for passage of measures).

The official portrait of former Governor Kenny C. Guinn, the 27th Governor of Nevada, was unveiled Tuesday at the Capitol where it will be displayed along side all previous Nevada Governor's portraits. It took the artist, Michele Rushworth, six weeks to paint the entire portrait.

Legislature Works to Meet Deadline

Legislative committees are working long hours, holding hearings and work sessions in an effort to move bills out of committees by the April 13th deadline for first House committee passage.

Being responsible to the Speaker of the Assembly and the Chief Clerk, the primary duty of the Sergeant at Arms and his staff is to maintain decorum within the Chamber of the Assembly. The staff has by statute the authority to take disruptive persons into temporary custody. Other duties include escorting dignitaries and making formal announcements.

Girl Scouts Visit the Legislature

Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada recently visited the Legislative Building for Girl Scout Government Day. In an effort to learn about the legislative process, the Scouts sat in on Assembly and Senate Floor Sessions and committee meetings, and toured the Legislative Building.

Historic Assembly Session

Tuesday, March 20th, the Assembly held their Floor Session in the Old Assembly Chamber in the Capitol Building. Speaker Buckley opened the Session followed by a story delivered by State Archivist Guy Rocha recalling earlier days of the State Legislature.

2007 Commemorative Gold Legislative Medallion

John Pappageorge was the lucky winner of the gold medallion minted for a charity fund-raising raffle to benefit the Carson City Senior Center. The raffle raised a total of $1170. A silent auction was also held for a second gold medallion of which the successful bidder, Marsha Hayes, named Easter Seals as the charity to receive her $2000 bid.

Seeliger Singers

On March 28, 2007, the Seeliger Singers from Seeliger Elementary School in Carson City performed for the Assembly as part of "Kick Butts Day in Nevada" which encourages youth to abstain from the use of tobacco.

Senator William J. Raggio opened the 74th Session of the Senate Floor Session. Senator Raggio has served 9 terms as a Senator in the Nevada Legislature. He is the longest serving
Senate Majority Floor Leader (10 sessions) and also has the longest Senate service in Nevada history (34 years). Senator Raggio has served during 18 regular and 9 special sessions.

Boy Scouts Visit the Legislature

Monday, February 26, 2007, was Boy Scout Government Day. Nearly 120 Boy Scouts from all corners of Nevada were in attendance at the Legislative Building to learn about the legislative process. The Scouts sat in on Assembly and Senate Floor Sessions and committee meetings, and toured the Legislative Building.
