About the Research Division

The Research Division of the Legislative Counsel Bureau is the general information and service arm of the Legislature. It conducts research into a wide variety of subjects at the request of legislators, legislative committees, State and local officials, and the public. The Division also responds to inquiries concerning Nevada's government, laws, and public policy issues from residents, legislative agencies, and public officials in other states. The Division is administered by the Research Director, a statutory officer appointed by the Director of the Legislative Counsel Bureau with the approval of the Legislative Commission. Most of the statutory duties of the Division and the Research Director are described in Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) 218F.800 and 218F.810.

The Division publishes research briefs, fact sheets, and policy and program reports about laws and programs in Nevada, prepares the Nevada Legislative Manual, and assists with decennial redistricting. The Research Library in the Division also provides assistance with compiling legislative histories of measures enacted by the Legislature and locating other legislative materials, as well as answering reference questions. Assistance for legislators with constituent concerns is also available through the Division's Constituent Services Unit.
